This project examines the interplay between continuity and change, as well as the curriculum expectation of D1. Social, Economic, and Political Context in the film Farewell to Oak Street. How do continuity and change appear in our everyday lives, and can they exist at the same time? Farewell to Oak Street documented families moving from one neighbourhood to another, with the target audience being white middle-class Canadians who had negative perspectives about families in poverty. As students view the documentary, they will explore the continuity and change they observe in the film and be given the opportunity, with a partner, to reframe the narrative through a particular scene or overall message. This tool offers students an opportunity to move beyond the surface level of sources and further analyze why certain messages and perspectives are being highlighted and which ones may be missing, as well as the reasons behind those omissions. Through this analysis, students can gain a deeper understanding of the Social, Economic, and Political Contexts at the time of the film and how these contexts have continued and changed through time to the current day.
