Ontario, Canada, and the world were experiencing a state of upheaval during the 1960s.
Population shifts, social movements and civil unrest shaped the landscape of the era. A shift in
consciousness challenged the political, social, and cultural structures established in the post-war period. In order to understand Ontario’s attempted shift in pedagogical practice during the 1960s, one must consider the historical backdrop against which it occurred.
In Ontario, the most influential educational text emerging from this period of contested
ideals was Living and Learning: The Report of the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario. Written in 1968, this report specifically identified the issues facing Ontario and Canada, and was acutely aware of ongoing international transformations.
