Thesis: In the early years of the Byzantine Empire, art of this newly “formed” culture was mostly religious in nature and carefully captured icons and religious paintings were an important way to connect the human being with the divine.
Through what has typically been known as the Dark Ages, there was a flourishing empire being born via the Romans. Extraordinary works of art were produced during this time. The Byzantine culture was influenced by ancient Greek culture, which had become a feature of Roman society as well. The first few centuries of Byzantine art are especially indicative and explain very well the themes and artistic endeavours of subsequent centuries. The fusion of Greek/Roman and Christian culture during these first formative years of the empire was well represented and documented during the art of this time period.
