This project explores historical perspective, one of the six historical thinking concepts coined by Peter Sexias and Tom Morton. The document defines the concept in accessible language and aligns it with one overall and specific expectation from the Grades 7-8 curriculum. It proposes a dual analysis of the Red River Resistance and Northwest Resistance through the lenses of the Crown and Métis people. A graphic organizer is included for engaging with activities that draw on historical perspective. The activity involves students critically probing the documents through perspective-taking and critical thinking. The purpose is to understand motivations, not justifications, for historical actors’ behaviours and beliefs. The piece concludes with a scholarly rationale, with references to educational philosophers Peter Sexias and John Dewey.
