Hypothesis: Social studies education in the province of New Brunswick in the 1940s changed dramatically as Canada began to reflect and question what it was teaching its next generation of citizens. It is our belief that Social Studies in New Brunswick started to transform in the 1940s into what is now thought of as a typical Social Studies class placing more emphasis on a ‘humanistic study,’ which was a movement away from memorization and regurgitation of facts towards a way for student’s to open their minds to the world, train their critical thinking abilities, and enrich their imaginations, while contributing by being an active citizen.
