In every society, gender arguably plays a significant role in how men and women are perceived and therefore expected to act. This was no different in the Byzantine Empire. As James comments in her article, gender was “equally fundamental to the ways in which Byzantine society operated.” In particular, the ways in which gender was constructed and viewed in the Byzantine Empire affected what female empresses were able to do in comparison to male emperors.
